Arthritis is a general term for rheumatic diseases that refers to conditions which affect the muscles, bones and joints. These rheumatic diseases refer to many diseases with a loss of immune self-regulation, leading to a chronic inflammation, degeneration, or metabolic derangement in multiple organs or tissues.
The causes of rheumatic diseases remain to be elucidated but are likely to be due to the interaction of environmental and genetic factors. Knowing the type of arthritis you have and where possible the causes means that it is possible to make informed decisions about management.
